Mahki Backstrom Inks Contract with Astros
First Voyager Signed to MLB Org this Season
There is a bitter-sweet feeling in the air in Great Falls for their star outfielder and first baseman Mahki Backstrom, as it was announced that he will be signing with the Houston Astros. Mahki will start his time with the Astros in their High-A affiliate, The Asheville Tourists. This is Backstrom's second stint with an MLB organization, as he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2019 and spent a few seasons with them.
This was Mahki's first season with the Voyagers, and although he only played 45 games with us, his impact will be remembered by those who could witness it. Backstrom finishes his time in Great Falls with 45 games played. In those 45 games, he sported an average of .350, an OBP of .426, and a slugging percentage of .706. He hit 12 home runs, drove in 41 runs, knocked 33 extra-base hits, and ran in 47 runs. Before some minor injury issues near the end of his time in Great Falls, Backstrom sat atop many statistical categories in the PBL. After his July 4th series in Great Falls, Backstrom was 1st in the league in extra-base hits, top five in home runs, and top 20 in batting average.
Mahki joins an Astros organization managed by GM Dana Brown. This is not Backstrom's first time working under Brown, as Brown served as VP of Scouting for the Atlanta Braves back in 2019 when the team selected Backstrom in the Draft.
Mahki is also known for his uplifting attitude around the locker room and organization, as well as his ultimate dedication to the game of baseball. Houston will not only be gaining a great baseball player but also a great man who will lead by example.
It is because of these numbers and his attitude that it is no surprise to see Mahki Backstrom get a promotion. While we at the Voyagers organization are sad to see him depart, we are also beyond excited to see what is in store for him with the Astros. We wish him nothing but the best in his future. Thank you Mahki, and good luck!
